In this context, the word SMART is an acronym, meaning
S - specific & strategic
M - measurable
A - achievable
R - relevant & results-orientated
T - time bound and timely
An example of a SMART goal is, 'At the end of the year, 30% of mathematics time will be dedicated to authentic, practical problem-solving activities'.
Specific means it is a narrow goal, focused on clearly defined outcomes.
Measurable means that growth can be quantified.
Achievable means the goal can be achieved within constraints of available funds and resources.
Relevant means that achieving the goal will improve student learning.
Time-bound means that achievement of the goal is bound by an explicit and manageable timeline.
